Christoph Schaub wurde 1958 in Zürich geboren. Während der Zürcher Jugendbewegung von 1980 stiess er zum Videoladen Zürich und lernte dort das filmische Handwerk. In der Folge entstanden seine ersten Dokumentarfilme «Keine Zeiten sich auszuruhen – AJZ im Herbst 81» (1982), «Nachwuchs – Zürcher Teddyszene» (1982) und «1 Lovesong» (1984).
Mitte der Achtzigerjahre schrieb Schaub zusammen mit Martin Witz das Drehbuch zu seinem preisgekrönten, ersten Spielfilm «Wendel» (1987) – die Geschichte einer Freundschaft und einer Wiederbegegnung einige Jahre später. Beide schauen auf die Freundschaft von früher zurück. Die Kritik feierte begeistert «das Werk einer neuen Generation im Schweizer Film» und es dauerte nicht lange, bis Schaub mit «Dreissig Jahre» (1989) die Premiere im Wettbewerb des Internationalen Festivals von Locarno feiern konnt. Mit seinem nächsten Film «Am Ende der Nacht» (1992) wurde er nach Cannes an die «Quinzaine des Réalisateurs» eingeladen.

Danach wandte sich Christoph Schaub wieder stärker dem Dokumentarfilm zu. Mit «Il Girasole – una casa vicino a Verona» (1995) entdeckte er die Architektur als Thema, es folgten Filme über Peter Zumthor und Gion A. Caminada («Lieu, Funcziun e Furma», 1996) sowie über Santiago Calatrava («Die Reisen des Santiago Calatrava», 1999). Grosse internationale Beachtung erreichte besonders «Bird’s Nest» (2008), eine Dokumentation über den Bau des Olympiastadions für die Olympischen Spiele in Peking der Schweizer Stararchitekten Herzog & de Meuron.
Mensch in Beziehung
Ab dem Jahr 2000 legte Schaub wieder mehr Gewicht auf die fiktionale Arbeit. Das Drama «Stille Liebe» (2001) erzählt die Emanzipationsgeschichte einer gehörlosen Nonne und deren Liebe zu einem gehörlosen Taschendieb. Der Film wurde mehrheitlich in Gebärdensprache gedreht. Mit der von Micha Lewinksy geschriebenen Komödie «Sternenberg» (2004), ursprünglich als Fernsehfilm geplant, gelang ihm ein Überraschungs-Hit an den Kinokassen. In «Jeune Homme» (2006) erzählt er die kuriose Geschichte eines männlichen Au-pairs im Welschland, während der Episodenfilm «Happy New Year» (2008)» fünf Geschichten zur grossstädtischen Einsamkeit einer Silvesternacht in Zürich erzählt. Mit «Giulias Verschwinden» (2009) verfilmte Schaub ein Drehbuch von Martin Suter mit Corinna Harfouch und Bruno Ganz in den Hauptrollen – und gewann damit viele Preise, unter anderem den Publikumspreis am Filmfestival Locarno.
Mit dem Film «Die Reisen des Santiago Calatrava» begann die bis heute andauernde Zusammenarbeit mit Marcel Hoehn (T&C Film).
